OBITUARY

Edward Martin Kovach, 82, of Chevy Chase, Maryland, passed away peacefully at his home on September 24, 2017, surrounded by his wife and children.

He is survived by Kathleen Cogan Kovach, his wife of 56 years, and their five children: Margaret, Anne and her husband Christopher Hebling, Marty and his wife Amy Lee, Kate and her husband James Gerard, and Alexandra; and six grandchildren: Francis, Alina, Thomas, Josie Kate, Dominik and August.

He is also survived by his sister Constance and her husband Richard Mank, and his brother-in-law Edward Cogan and his wife Jeanne, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Ed graduated from Georgetown University College in 1957, and from the Law School in 1960. He practiced labor law in San Francisco for 45 years, and in that time served as Vice President and General Counsel for the Pacific Maritime Association from 1982-1997.

Ed was the true definition of a “Renaissance Man.” His intellect was strong and his interests diverse. His intense love of art, music, and astronomy was complemented by his skilled craftsmanship in woodworking. He played the harmonica with abandon. He firmly believed in the good of democracy and the strength of the Constitution. He loved travel, books, and good conversation, and absorbing new cultures and exploring ideas as a result of all three. He loved his life, his friends, and most of all his wife and family. He will be dearly missed.

Funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, October 3, 10:30 am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 3513 N St NW, Washington, DC 20007.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Edward M. Kovach Cura Personalis Lectureship, a lecture series for the Georgetown University and Lombardi Cancer Center community to promote “caring for the whole person” as the ethical foundation for excellent medical care.
