Joann Cowie

Joann Cowie, age 81, of Newton Falls, passed into eternal life on Sunday, May 29, 2016, at St. Joseph Eastland of natural causes.

On March 21, 1935, in Koppel, PA, Glenn and Dora Estella (Linzey) Shellenberger were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Joann.

Joann married the love of her life, Raymond A. Cowie, on January 6, 1955 and they have enjoyed 61 blessed years of marriage together.

Joann had lived in Newton Falls since 1969, working at Jack & Jill Day Care for many years. She formerly lived in Beaver Falls, PA, graduating from Ellwood City High School in 1953. Joann belonged to the First Church of God in Newton Falls, where she was a member of the Christian Women's Association (WCG). Joann joined her husband in the Jail Ministry and enjoyed cooking holiday meals for the Trumbull County Juvenile Justice Center. She enjoyed taking care of all people who needed help, especially the elderly. Joann took great pride in cooking and taking care of the kids, she was known to them as "Aunt Joann."

Memories of Joann will be carried on by her loving family; her husband Raymond of Newton Falls; her daughter Cheryl and Gary Hudson of Oak Island, NC; her son Tom and Donna Cowie of Newton Falls; her sister June Lewis of Moss Point, MS; her brothers Donald Shellenberger of Ellwood City, PA, and Paul and Norma Shellenberger of Elyjay, GA; her grandsons Zachary Hudson of Concord, NC, Bryan Cowie, Payson and (Holly) Cowie, all of Austintown.

Calling hours will be held at the JAMES FUNERAL HOME in Newton Falls on Thursday, June 2, 2016 from 5 to 8 p.m. There will also be calling hours held on Friday, June 3, 2016 at the First Church of God in Newton Falls from 10 to 11 a.m. where a funeral service will immediately follow at 11 a.m. Joann will be laid to rest in Newton Falls Cemetery at a later date. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at St. Joseph Eastland for their loving care.

The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, all contributions go to the Endowment Fund at the First Church of God, 426 West Broad Street, Newton Falls, OH 44444.
